How to protect your car from stone chips

The most effective way to reduce stone-chip damage is to protect the panels most exposed to road debris before permanent damage occurs. XPEL paint protection film creates a clear, self-healing barrier over the paintwork, absorbing impacts from stones and gravel that would otherwise mark the factory finish.

Coverage can begin with the front bumper and extend to the bonnet, front wings, headlights, mirrors, sills and rear-wheel impact areas depending on how and where the vehicle is driven.

Where stone chips occur first

Impact risk is not equal across the vehicle. These are the panels we assess first when recommending protection.

01

Front Bumper

The first line of defence against loose stones, grit and road debris.

02

Bonnet & Front Wings

Large painted surfaces that collect chips during motorway and A-road driving.

03

Headlights & Mirrors

Forward-facing areas exposed to repeated small impacts and abrasion.

04

A-pillars & Roof Edge

Frequently overlooked areas that are vulnerable at sustained road speeds.

05

Lower Sills & Side Skirts

Lower panels affected by road grit, spray and debris thrown up by the tyres.

06

Rear Wheel Impact Area

Paintwork immediately ahead of and behind the rear wheels can develop road rash

Stone Chip Protection FAQs

How can I protect my car from stone chips?

Professionally installed paint protection film is the most effective way to reduce stone-chip damage before it occurs. XPEL PPF forms a clear physical barrier over the paintwork, absorbing impacts from stones, gravel and road debris. Coverage can be limited to the most vulnerable panels or extended across the entire vehicle.

Does PPF stop all stone chips?

PPF significantly reduces the risk of stone chips by absorbing impacts before they reach the factory paintwork. No film can guarantee protection against every possible impact, particularly unusually large or high-speed debris, but XPEL PPF provides an effective barrier during normal road use.

Which areas of a car are most likely to suffer stone chips?

The front bumper, bonnet, front wings, headlights and mirror caps receive the most direct impact from stones and road debris. Vehicles covering regular motorway or fast A-road mileage may also benefit from protection on the A-pillars, leading edge of the roof, side skirts and areas immediately behind the wheels.

Does ceramic coating protect against stone chips?

No. Ceramic coating improves gloss, chemical resistance, water repellency and ease of maintenance, but it does not provide meaningful protection against stone-chip impacts. XPEL PPF forms a physical barrier over the paintwork and is the appropriate choice when stone-chip protection is the priority.

Can PPF be applied over existing stone chips?

It can, but existing stone chips and road rash will remain visible beneath the film. Machine polishing can improve swirl marks and lighter scratches, but it cannot repair missing paint. More significant damage may need professional refinishing before PPF is installed.

Is PPF worthwhile on a used car?

PPF is best suited to brand-new cars or vehicles with relatively low mileage and paintwork in very good condition. Once a vehicle has covered more than approximately 15,000 miles, stone chips across the front end and road rash on lower panels are usually already present, so PPF may no longer represent a worthwhile investment. We inspect used vehicles before installation and will advise honestly on their suitability.

Can damaged paint protection film be replaced?

Yes. If one section of PPF becomes heavily marked or damaged, the film can normally be removed and replaced on that individual panel without replacing the entire installation. The paintwork beneath is inspected before the replacement film is applied.
